Hipsters are the Future
Imagine a kind of Eloi-esque utopian future, where all of our physical needs are met (either by a stable economy, or by the Morlocks). In this world, what is left for us to do? What’s left is culture: art, music, writing, gaming, fashion, story-telling, video, crafts, etc. Culture will always evolve. The Internet is getting us to this utopian world sooner rather than later. The barrier has...

The Drone bee has no father, but does have a grandfather! Each & every time! Here’s how it works: Queen bees can mate with a Drone to produce fertilized eggs Fertilized eggs always become new Queens, or Workers, but never Drones Queen bees can lay unfertilized eggs Unfertilized eggs always become new Drones So Queens always have a mother & a father (as do workers). Drones however,...

This year, Jesus will rise from the dead before having his last supper. Either he’s switching things up, or you buy this guys astronomical calendar explanation. (I like to think he’s switching things up)

Mileage & Momentum
There’s that frustrating moment while driving we’ve all experienced: you’re cruising along, alone as far as the eye can see, when you’re forced to stop for a red light, wait, and accelerate away. This is only for the convenience of the machine. All momentum is lost to braking, and all that gas spent to get going again is a waste of energy. If the light had only been...

Why aren't you working for a startup? →
Some great excerpts: When’s the last time you worked until tomorrow and had a great time?  Do you get letters from customers and supporters telling you how much they love your product? When you talk about what you do, do you get so infectiously excited about it that, all of the sudden, everyone around you is talking about it, too?

Smell of Success
Today’s weather is finally warm enough to open the windows, greeting my nostrils with spring + burger & fries. (Our office is on the 4th floor of a soon to be remodeled mill, in Waltham MA, and above a sub-shop) I believe this is a good omen. Our founders last company started above a restaurant, YouTube above a pizza place, and the list goes on. So sweet & savory, this good omen...

Your product is your marketing. Full stop.
Here at SXSW, Apple doesn’t bother with a booth, schwag, party or any other such goodwill-cum-marketing scheme to ‘woo’ the techies. Why would they when glowing Apple laptop emblems saturate your field of vision? I would guess-timate from where I sit 80% of the laptops are Macs.  Dell is busy with a booth, free drinks, a lounge, and junk. A losing strategy in a hopeless battle?...

De-incentivizing Captcha Cracking
Today at SXSW, Ian Muir led a brief discussion on how to prevent captcha cracking. One of the problems with any technical solution is that any human can still “crack captchas” for the wrong reasons: either because they are paid to by spammers, or tricked into cracking the captcha by the spammers (in exchange for free porn in some cases!) The only way we’ll ever be able to prevent...

iPhone Apps
The news is really great: The iPhone gets enterprise features (Exchange) and will soon have an app-store for touch enabled apps. Given the mobile, semi-location aware, always-online nature of the device, coupled with it’s amazing screen & touch interface… we’ve really entered into Star Trek land. Prediction: one of the biggest apps for the phone will scan bar-codes &...
